I am Ed Huehn, a man who quilts. I am known as the Sewing Husband because of the way I got my start quilting. When my wife coordinated a Quilts of Valor project in 2008. She assigned me to the cutting table and taught me how to cut with a rotary cutter. Later in the day, there was a sewing machine available and more work to be don, so she taught me to use a sewing machine. Since I like puzzles, at the end of the event there were many single, orphan blocks that I was able to piece together and make additional quilts. That was the beginning of it all.
After the project was finished, I found ideas creeping into my head and I just had to start sewing. I would sneak into my wife’s sewing room, when she was away, to use her machine. When I left the wrong color thread in the bobbin of her machine, she suggested I get my own sewing machine. I call my work improvisational quilting. I interpret what I see and hear into fabric. It may be based on flowers, shapes or even a bible verse. There is versatility in my work as many items may be used as wall hangings or table runners. I also put photos on fabric to become pillows or wall hangings. I find joy in what I so and hope that you will as well.
